Blood Brain Barrier – proteins like you’ve never seen them before
The Blood Brain Barrier is the brain’s boarder control, preventing harmful substances but also useful drugs coming through. The researchers within the Human Protein Atlas-project at SciLifeLab are mapping out the proteins in 3D. This makes it possible for Evelina Sjöstedt to voyage through the brain to study the cells and proteins involved in the brains protection system. In the video you can see the endothelial cells, the blood vessels branching out in the brain and the star shaped astrocytes, the barrier’s building blocks. It is important to understand the blood brain barrier to be able to make drugs that can pass through it.
