Autonomous systems – a new industrial revolution

Autonomous systems are predicted to become the fourth industrial revolution. At Wallenberg Autonomous Systems and Software Program, WASP, intensive research is ongoing. It's about smart systems in cities, systems that control vehicles and traffic systems, self-governing mines and warehouses, smart robots that can see and understand their surroundings.

A key element in the program is the establishment of a platform for academic research and education capable of interacting with Swedish industry. The foundation stone is a clear transfer of knowledge to industry for research and refinement. One example is the graduate school, which is run in collaboration with Swedish companies. A total of at least 100 doctoral students will be admitted, of whom half will be externally employed. Infrastructure such as demonstration platforms and national demonstration arenas are other features of the collaboration.

Notwithstanding the involvement of industry, the emphasis of the program is on basic research. In addition to Sweden’s four major ICT universities (Chalmers, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Linköping University and Lund University), the program includes research teams at other institutions. The idea is to combine existing leading competencies in the field of electrotechnology, computer technology and computer science. The initiative also includes an international recruitment program.

The overall initiative involves a sum of SEK 1.8 billion, of which the Foundation is providing SEK 1.3 billion. The universities involved and Swedish industrial companies will be contributing the remaining SEK 500 million.
