Wallenberg Scholar Martin Högbom, Stockholm University, wants to understand nature's secret trick when it manages to transform one substance into another. For example, how the bacterium that can convert the greenhouse gas methane into methanol does. Then harmful greenhouse gases could be converted into something useful, such as a raw material or energy source. But no one yet knows how the bacterium succeeds. Martin wants to get closer to solving the riddle by photographing the sequence of events. But these are complicated experiments. It's about time lapses of millionths of billionths of a second and explosive energies.
