Ten young researchers receive two-year scholarships for post-doctoral studies at Stanford University

Press release
30 January 2014

Thanks to scholarships from the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation, eight young Swedish researchers will have the opportunity to make a post-doctoral visit to Stanford University. Another two are receiving scholarships for a post-doc visit to the Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Lightsource (SSRL). The researchers are also guaranteed a two-year position when they return to a Swedish university.

“Research is international by nature. It is incredibly important for the development of Swedish research that our young research talents have the opportunity to work in internationally leading settings. This is also the background of the Foundation’s scholarship program,” says Peter Wallenberg Jr, Vice Chairman of the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation.

The Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation announced scholarships in two programs at the end of 2013: “The MAX IV synchrotron radiation facility program” and “The Wallenberg Foundation Postdoctoral Scholarship Program at Stanford”.

Stanford University in California is one of the world’s most well-reputed universities and has 22 Nobel laureates on its rosters. Since the 1950s, the Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Lightsource (SSRL) has been among the world’s foremost synchrotron radiation lightsources. The Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation has cooperated with Stanford University for many years and has its own contact center, Wallenberg Hall, in one of the centrally located buildings on the Stanford campus.

In total, ten researchers from eight different universities in Sweden are now being granted two-year post-doc scholarships in these prominent research environments.

“It is particularly pleasing that there is such a broad distribution both in terms of the universities and the research areas. They extend from Luleå in the north to Lund in the south, and from theoretical chemistry to digital humanities,” notes Göran Sandberg, Executive Director of the Foundation.
